Indian Bedsheet Size vs US and UK: Inches, CM and What Fits

An Indian queen sheet suits a 60 x 78 inch mattress, close to a US queen and equal to a UK king. An Indian king suits 72 x 78 inches, narrower than a US king. Measure first.

Three printed cotton bedsheets on made beds: a white and indigo floral, a peach paisley with a border, and a white elephant print with a plum border

In short

  • An Indian queen mattress is about 60 x 78 inches (152 x 198 cm): the same as a UK king and 2 inches shorter than a US queen.
  • An Indian king mattress is about 72 x 78 inches (183 x 198 cm): the same as a UK super king, but 4 inches narrower than a US king.
  • An Indian double is about 48 x 75 inches (122 x 190 cm), which matches a UK small double and is narrower than a US full or a UK double.
  • Flat sheets forgive a size gap and fitted sheets do not, so choose flat when your mattress is deep or a US king.
  • Names on Indian sheets overlap, so a 225 x 250 cm flat sheet can be called queen or king: go by the centimetres, not the word.

An Indian queen bedsheet suits a mattress of about 60 x 78 inches (152 x 198 cm), which is nearly a US queen and exactly a UK king. An Indian king suits about 72 x 78 inches (183 x 198 cm). That is a UK super king, but 4 inches narrower than a US king.

So the name will mislead you the moment you cross a border. This guide gives you the sizes side by side, the sheet to pick for your bed, and how to look after block prints once they are home. Everything you need is on the bedsheets and bedding shelf; the tables tell you which ones to open.

How do Indian bed sizes compare with US, UK and Australian sizes?

They line up best with the UK and worst with the US. Every Indian size has a UK twin under a different name, while a US king has no common Indian match. The table below is a general guide, width first, in inches and centimetres.

Two warnings about that table. First, Indian sizes are not a fixed standard. Design guides warn that makers can differ by 5 to 10 cm, and you will meet a king of 72 x 72 or 72 x 84 inches and a queen of 60 x 72 or 60 x 75. Second, US charts usually round up: the industry figure for a queen is 60 x 79.5 inches, and most shoppers simply read it as 60 x 80.

How do you measure your mattress for an Indian bedsheet?

Measure the mattress itself, in three directions, with the bed made bare. The frame does not matter and neither does the size printed on the receipt.

  1. Width: side to side across the middle of the mattress.
  2. Length: head to foot, down the middle.
  3. Depth: bottom edge to top surface, with any topper or protector you keep on it. This is the number people forget, and it decides whether a fitted sheet works.
  4. Write all three in inches and centimetres. Sheet sizes in this category are given in metres, centimetres, inches and sometimes feet, often on the same shelf.

One more trap. Indian product pages usually print a sheet as length x width, while mattress charts print width x length, so read the labels beside the numbers before you compare. If you are sizing clothes as well, our Indian size chart for women does the same job for kurtas and blouses.

Why do Indian queen and king flat sheets overlap?

Because the name describes the bed it is sold for, not a fixed piece of cloth. We read the stated measurements on a sample of about 290 bedsheets in this category, and the labels run into each other.

A 225 x 250 cm sheet appears here as both a queen and a king. So a sheet called king can be smaller than one called queen. Compare the numbers, and only the numbers.

The everyday size for a queen mattress in the US, UK or Australia.

Which Indian flat sheet fits a US, UK or Australian bed?

A flat sheet works on nearly any bed if it leaves enough spare cloth. You want your mattress depth plus about 3 inches (8 cm) on each side, and the same again at the foot. A 12 inch (30 cm) mattress therefore wants about 15 inches (38 cm) spare. This table is our own arithmetic, using the common sheet sizes above.

Worked from the mattress sizes and sheet sizes in the tables above. Spare length has to cover the foot and any tuck at the head.

Look at the US king row. An Indian king of 228 x 274 cm laid long side across gives you the width but only about 10 inches (25 cm) of length, which will not tuck under a 12 inch mattress. If your bed is a US king, go to super king. A 104 x 104 inch sheet still leaves 14 inches a side and 24 inches of length.

Will an Indian fitted sheet fit a US, UK or Australian mattress?

Often in the UK, sometimes in Australia, rarely in the US. A fitted sheet has to match in width, length and depth, and elastic only forgives a little.

California king, 72 x 84 inKing, 72 x 78 in6 in (15 cm) short. Choose a flat sheet.
A general guide worked from the size tables above. Elastic and cloth vary from sheet to sheet.

Depth is the real catch. Fitted sheets here that state a depth tend to be shallow: one says it suits a mattress up to 8 inches, another gives 9 inches. A US size chart we read gives fitted pockets of about 12 to 15 inches. If your mattress is deeper than the sheet allows, the corners will pop off however well the width matches.

Read the size line carefully too. Some fitted sheets labelled double queen measure 198 x 182 cm, which is a 6 foot wide mattress and would hang loose on a 5 foot one. Others state 250 x 225 cm, which cannot be a mattress size and looks like the cloth before the elastic goes in. That tells you little about fit, so choose one that gives a mattress size.

A plain-speaking fitted queen

A checked pure cotton elasticated sheet stated at 78 x 60 inches, or 198 x 152 cm. That matches a UK king on width and length, and it is a good example of a size line that tells you what you need.

  • Pure cotton, 300 thread count
  • Cold wash with mild detergent, washed separately
  • No depth is stated, so be careful with a deep mattress

What is a Jaipuri bedsheet, and is it always block printed?

A Jaipuri bedsheet is a cotton sheet printed in the style of the Jaipur region: small repeating florals, buta motifs and a bold border. The word describes a look, so it does not promise hand printing. Plenty of sheets with the look are made another way.

Two places shaped that look. Sanganer, just south of Jaipur, is known for fine direct prints on white grounds. Bagru, about 32 km from the city, is known for prints on dyed grounds and for dabu, where a paste of clay and other materials is pressed on by block to keep dye out of the pattern. Both towns have long block-printing traditions.

There is no perfect test, but real hand work leaves signs:

Those small differences are the point of the craft rather than a fault. If you want perfectly even repeats, a screen or digital print will suit you better.

Jaipuri and block-print cotton sheets

Sizes vary widely here, so read each size line against the tables above.

Cotton, polycotton or microfiber: what should you check?

Check the material line before the thread count. Sheets in this category sit under the same names and similar prints but differ in cloth: pure cotton, cotton, polycotton and microfiber. A title that says "cotton feel" is telling you it is not cotton.

Thread count is a weak guide for printed cotton. Many block-style sheets here state between 104 and 300, and a lower number is normal for this kind of crisp, airy cloth. A 300 count microfiber and a 180 count cotton are simply different fabrics. Pick cotton for a crisp, cool hand feel in a warm room, and microfiber if easy washing and quick drying matter more.

Then there are the pillow covers. Most here measure about 46 x 69 cm (18 x 27 inches). A US standard pillow is 51 x 66 cm and an Australian one is 48 x 73 cm, so the fit will be snug or a little short. Measure a pillow if that bothers you. For cushions and the rest of the room, the home and living department has more.

How do you wash block-print and cotton bedsheets?

Wash it alone and cold the first few times. Care lines on these sheets warn that colour may release in the early washes, which is common for printed cotton and is not a sign that something is wrong.

  1. Follow the sheet's own care line first, as they differ. Some allow a low tumble, others say not to tumble at all.
  2. Wash separately in cold water for the first few washes, on a gentle cycle or by hand. Keep dark prints away from whites after that too.
  3. Use a mild detergent and no bleach. Some care lines also say not to soak.
  4. Dry in the shade. Strong direct sun fades print faster. In a Toronto or Manchester winter, an indoor rack works well.
  5. Iron on the reverse, while slightly damp, so the print is not pressed directly.

The quick way to choose

Questions people ask

Is an Indian king size bed the same as a US king?

No. An Indian king is usually about 72 x 78 inches (183 x 198 cm), while a US king is about 76 x 80 inches (193 x 203 cm). The Indian size is 4 inches narrower and 2 inches shorter, so an Indian fitted king will not go on a US king mattress. Use a flat super king sheet instead.

Which Indian bedsheet fits a US queen bed?

A flat Indian queen sheet of about 90 x 100 inches (228 x 254 cm) fits well. It leaves roughly 15 inches on each side and 20 inches in length on a 60 x 80 inch mattress. A fitted Indian queen is 2 inches short, so it only suits a shallow mattress.

What is the size of a double bedsheet in inches in India?

It varies, because double is a loose label. A double mattress in India is about 48 x 75 inches, and flat sheets called double commonly measure about 87 x 87 inches (220 x 220 cm) or 90 x 100 inches (228 x 254 cm). Always read the stated size.

What is the bedsheet size for a queen bed?

For an Indian queen mattress of 60 x 78 inches, a flat sheet of about 90 x 100 inches or a fitted sheet of 60 x 78 inches is the usual choice. On a US or Australian queen of 60 x 80 inches, the same flat sheet still works.

Is a UK king the same as an Indian queen?

Yes, by the numbers. Both are about 60 x 78 inches (152 x 198 cm), and an Indian king matches a UK super king in the same way. Check the depth of a fitted sheet against your mattress before you decide.

Is every Jaipuri bedsheet hand block printed?

No. Jaipuri describes the style of print, and many sheets with the look are made by other methods. Look for hand block named in the product details, and for small variations in the repeat.

Will the colour run on a block-print bedsheet?

It can in the first few washes, and the care lines on these sheets say so. Wash the sheet alone in cold water with a mild detergent, avoid bleach, and dry it in the shade.
