What to Wear to an Indian Wedding (Men): Kurta, Jacket or Suit

Wear a kurta set with a Nehru jacket to most functions and a bandhgala or dark suit to the reception. Keep the sherwani for the groom's side, and choose shoes that slip off easily.

In short

  • A kurta set with a Nehru jacket is the safest outfit for a male guest at almost every Indian wedding function.
  • A suit is fine at the reception, and a closed-neck bandhgala does the same job with more of a wedding feel.
  • A sherwani usually belongs to the groom and his close family, so a guest should wear one only if the family suggests it.
  • Choose shoes you can take off in seconds, because many ceremonies happen barefoot.
  • Bring something to cover your head for a Sikh ceremony, where every guest must have his head covered inside the gurdwara.

For most Indian wedding functions, a man should wear a kurta set with a Nehru jacket, in a rich colour and a fabric that suits the time of day. A bandhgala or a sharp dark suit works for the reception. Leave the sherwani to the groom's side, and wear shoes that slip off.

That is the short version. The longer one depends on three things: which function you are dressing for, how traditional the family is, and whether the wedding sits in a hot hall in Dubai or a cold one in Toronto. If you are dressing a couple, our function-by-function guest guide covers the women's side too.

What should a man wear to an Indian wedding?

You have five options, rising in formality from the kurta set to the sherwani. Most guests need only the first two.

OutfitWhat it isWear it toSkip it when
Kurta setA long, knee-length shirt with a stand collar, worn with pyjamas or slim churidar trousersMehendi, haldi, sangeet, the ceremonyThe invitation asks for black tie
Kurta with Nehru jacketThe same set plus a sleeveless, stand-collar waistcoatEvery function, including the ceremony and receptionA very hot outdoor day: lose the jacket
BandhgalaA closed-neck suit jacket, sometimes called a Jodhpuri, worn with trousersReception, sangeet, an evening ceremonyHaldi and daytime mehendi
SuitA regular lapel suit with a shirt, with or without a tieReception, church ceremonies, relaxed familiesA traditional ceremony where everyone else is in kurtas
SherwaniA long, structured formal coat worn over a kurta and churidarGroom's side, or when the family asksYou are a guest and nobody suggested it

What should you wear to each function?

Dress for the function, because each one has its own mood. Not every family holds all of these, and the names change by region, so read the invitation first. Anything it says beats this table.

For daytime functions, cotton is your friend: it is easy to wear through a long afternoon and easier to wash than silk after a splash of turmeric. There are more in men's kurtas.

Daytime kurta sets for mehendi and haldi

Cotton and cotton blends in colours that like the daylight.

Evenings can take more shine. Thread embroidery and small sequins catch the light without turning you into the groom, and a dark colour keeps the sparkle quiet.

Evening kurta sets for the sangeet

More texture and a little shine, still easy to dance in.

Why is a Nehru jacket the safest choice?

A Nehru jacket works because it instantly makes a plain kurta look dressed, and it comes off when the room heats up. Wear it with a bright kurta at the sangeet and a pale one at the ceremony, and you have two looks from one layer.

Choose by climate. A silk blend with gold embroidery suits a warm evening, while a wool jacket earns its place at a Canadian or European winter wedding. Browse more in Nehru jackets and sherwanis.

The jacket to buy if you buy one

A plain maroon Nehru jacket goes with cream, gold, peach, pale blue and most other kurta colours, and it is rich enough for the ceremony.

  • Stand collar, full button front and three pockets
  • Cotton blend, lighter than the wool jackets below
  • Dry clean only, so keep it away from the haldi

Gold embroidery for evenings, wool for cold weather, and one full set if you would rather not match anything yourself.

Kurta or suit: when is a suit fine?

A suit is always acceptable at the reception, and nobody will blink. It is also normal at a Christian ceremony, and at weddings where the couple's own families mostly wear Western clothes. The one place it can feel out of step is a traditional Hindu or Sikh ceremony, where you may be the only man in a jacket and lapels, sitting barefoot on the floor.

If you do wear a suit, skip the charcoal office look. Navy, deep green or a dark blue with some texture reads as a celebration. A waistcoat and trousers with a stand collar sits neatly between the two worlds,. More options are under men's jackets and suits.

Dark blues with a little interest, plus a stand-collar waistcoat set.

When does a bandhgala work?

A bandhgala is the right answer for any evening function where you want the polish of a suit with an Indian shape. It buttons to the neck, so you need no tie and no shirt collar to worry about. Jacquard weaves have enough pattern to stand on their own with plain trousers, and velvet is at its strongest in winter.

Most of these jackets are cut slim, so try yours with whatever you plan to wear underneath. A bandhgala that strains at the button looks like a borrowed one.

Woven silk blends for texture, velvet for a cold night.

Can a guest wear a sherwani?

Yes, but a sherwani usually marks the groom and the men closest to him, such as his father, brothers and best friends. If you are on the groom's side and the family asks you to wear one, go ahead. If you are a friend or a colleague, a full sherwani in cream and gold can look as if you are competing with him.

A lighter route is an Indo-western set with a shorter or open front, in a colour well away from the groom's. Ask before you buy, because families often have a colour plan for the main party. Someone may also offer to tie you a safa, a wedding turban, for the baraat. Say yes, it is a warm welcome and very much part of the fun.

What shoes should men wear to an Indian wedding?

Wear juttis or mojaris, the flat slip-on shoes made to go with a kurta (browse men's ethnic shoes). Laced shoes are the wrong choice for the ceremony, because you will often take them off outside the mandap, the canopy where the rites happen, or at the door of a temple or gurdwara.

Which colours work, and which should you avoid?

Jewel tones are the easy win: navy, emerald, maroon, mustard, teal, plum, and softer peach or rose for the daytime. An Indian wedding is a fine place for a man to wear pink, and you will look more at home in colour than in grey.

How do Indian men's sizes compare?

Measure your chest and compare the numbers, because the letter on the label may not match the one you wear at home. One embroidered cotton set here is shown on a 6 ft (183 cm) model with a 35 inch (89 cm) chest wearing a medium, a chest many US and UK charts would call a small.

  1. Measure around the fullest part of your chest over a thin T-shirt, in inches or centimetres.
  2. Check the size chart on the product page and compare it with your measurement.
  3. Kurtas should feel loose: you should be able to lift your arms and sit on the floor comfortably.
  4. If you wear a Nehru jacket or bandhgala, measure over the kurta or shirt you will wear beneath it. Bandhgalas are often sized in numbers such as 36 or 38, which you can compare with the chart in the same way.
  5. If you are between sizes in a slim jacket, take the larger one. A tailor can take it in, but letting it out is much harder.

Questions people ask

Can a white or non-Indian man wear a kurta to an Indian wedding?

Yes. Being invited is all the permission you need, and wearing a kurta or sherwani shows that you made an effort for the family. Choose what you feel comfortable in, ask a friend from the family if you are unsure, and do not worry about getting every detail right.

Is a suit okay for an Indian wedding as a male guest?

Yes, particularly at the reception, where a suit is entirely normal. At a traditional ceremony it is still polite, but you may stand out, so a kurta or bandhgala fits in better. Choose a colour with some life in it and shoes you can take off.

What should a man wear to an Indian wedding reception?

A bandhgala with trousers or a well-fitted suit is the usual choice, and both look right on a dance floor. A silk-blend kurta with a Nehru jacket is equally correct if you prefer Indian dress. Evening receptions can carry deeper colours and more texture.

Do men need to cover their heads at an Indian wedding?

At a Sikh wedding in a gurdwara, yes: every guest covers his head, a handkerchief or small scarf is fine, and spares are usually offered at the entrance. Some Hindu temples and traditional families also expect it, and customs at a Muslim nikah vary by family. Carry a handkerchief and you are ready for any of them.

Do you take your shoes off at an Indian wedding?

Often, yes. Shoes come off inside a gurdwara and at most temples, and frequently at the mandap as well. Slip-on shoes save you trouble, and clean socks are useful on a cold floor.
