Lavie Handbags: Who Owns the Brand and Which Bag to Choose
Lavie is an Indian handbag brand owned by Bagzone Lifestyles, begun with bags made for a family event in 2009. Here is its story, plus which style suits work, travel and a wedding.

In short
- Lavie is an Indian handbag brand owned by Bagzone Lifestyles Pvt Ltd, whose CEO is Ayush Tainwala.
- Lavie says its story began in 2009, when Shobha Tainwala designed colourful handbags for guests at a private family event.
- Most Lavie bags are PU or synthetic leather, so they are light and easy to wipe clean but need keeping away from heat and long damp spells.
- For work, pick a tote or shoulder bag sized to your laptop's real measurements; for travel, a zip-top sling; for a wedding, a framed clutch or a potli.
- Lavie's CEO describes the brand as affordable luxury, and its premium extension is called Lavie Luxe.
Lavie is an Indian handbag brand owned by Bagzone Lifestyles Pvt Ltd. Its story began in 2009, when Shobha Tainwala made colourful bags for guests at a family event and the requests kept coming. Today it makes totes, satchels, slings, clutches and backpacks, mostly in PU and synthetic leather.
If you grew up visiting India, you have probably seen that curly gold signature on a cousin's shoulder. Here is who is behind it, what the bags are made of, and which shape earns its place at your desk, on a long-haul flight and at a sangeet (the music and dance night before a wedding).
Who owns Lavie, and how did it begin?
Bagzone Lifestyles Pvt Ltd owns Lavie, along with Lavie Sport and Lavie Luxe, and Ayush Tainwala is its CEO. The company took its first outside investment in October 2023, from First Bridge India Growth Fund, according to the Free Press Journal.
The origin story is the brand's own, and it starts away from any factory. Lavie's About page describes a private family event in 2009 where the handbags Mrs. Shobha Tainwala had designed for the guests became the talk of the room. Friends pushed her to make more, and when orders outran her she turned to her brother. Together they saw an opening for a more ambitious Indian bag label.
The pair then travelled through Europe and Asia looking for design ideas and materials, and Lavie credits those trips, from 2010 to 2012, with shaping the label. You may also see 2010 quoted as the start, because that is when the Free Press Journal says the company showed its first collection. Both dates point to real moments: the idea in 2009, the first collection soon after.
Where are Lavie bags made, and how?
Lavie has its own plant in India, in Maharashtra. In 2023 the CEO told the Free Press Journal that the plant near Nashik turned out about 200,000 bags a month, with a second factory coming up nearby in the Igatpuri district to lift capacity to about 500,000.
In an interview with Fibre2Fashion, he also named automated cutting, embroidery, printing and pasting machines, and said in-house solar power covers half of the company's energy needs. Lavie describes a four-stage design and development process for each product. These are the brand's own statements rather than an independent audit, so read them that way.
Are Lavie bags real leather?
Mostly no. Nearly every Lavie bag we looked at for this guide is listed as PU or synthetic leather, and the CEO talks about premium vegan leather as a deliberate choice. PU (polyurethane) is a coated man-made surface that imitates leather's grain.
That shapes what you can expect. These bags are lighter than most full-grain leather, they hold a crisp structured shape, and a wipe deals with most marks. They will not develop a patina the way hide does. If you want a bag that ages into something richer over a decade, this is the wrong shelf. If you want a sharp bag in a colour you would never risk in leather, it is the right one.
Is Lavie a luxury brand?
Not in the sense of a European house. Its CEO describes the aim as affordable luxury: current shapes and a polished finish, made for regular use. Lavie Luxe is the premium extension, and Elle India reported its Occasion Edit in November 2025, built around shimmer and gold-tone hardware for cocktail nights and weddings.
Among Indian handbag brands, then, think of Lavie as the everyday-to-occasion label rather than the heritage leather one. The giveaways are the metal signature, the colour range and the logo-print Mono designs, printed with an LL pattern. Fibre2Fashion also reports a collaboration with designer Payal Singhal that mixes her prints with Lavie's shapes, which is the fusion side of the brand showing through.
Which Lavie bag works best for the office?
Choose a structured tote or shoulder bag with a zip top and a laptop compartment. Soft totes slump when a laptop goes in, and an open top is a nuisance on a crowded train. Look at the depth figure too: anything around 12 to 14 cm (about 5 in) leaves room for a slim lunchbox beside the laptop.
The one for a full work bag
A roomy black shoulder bag with a fine herringbone texture and a zip top. Its product photos mark it as fitting a 14-inch laptop.
- 30 x 45 x 14 cm (11.8 x 17.7 x 5.5 in)
- Three inner pockets and a detachable sling strap
- Black hides commuter scuffs better than the pale colours
Totes and shoulder bags for the desk
Each has a zip top; check the laptop or tablet fit on the product page.
Not carrying a laptop? A satchel looks more put-together and suits a client lunch or a parents' evening. It has a shorter handle and a flatter base, so it stands up on a table. Most of these come with a strap you can remove. More shapes sit among our handbags and the wider bags section.
Satchels and smaller day bags
Good for days when a laptop stays home.
Which Lavie bag is best for travel?
A zip-top sling worn across the body is the easiest travel bag: hands free, closed, and in front of you in a crowd. Check that it fits a passport and phone, and that the strap adjusts to sit at the hip over a coat as well as a T-shirt.
The one for sightseeing days
A black crossbody with a pebbled finish and an adjustable strap. It is deeper than most slings, with a built-in phone pouch, so a sunglasses case fits without a fight.
- 19 x 22.5 x 12.5 cm (7.5 x 8.9 x 4.9 in)
- Four inner pockets and one outside
- Zip closure across the top
Slings, a backpack and a small wallet
The Cobie backpack's listing says up to a 15-inch laptop, but it has a non-padded back and is not water-resistant, so use a sleeve.

One honest warning on screen sizes: a 15-inch laptop is not one fixed size. Before relying on any label, measure your own machine against the bag's height and width. More options sit under backpacks and travel and wallets and belts.
What should you carry to an Indian wedding?
Carry a small framed clutch or a potli, and match it to the function, not just the outfit. A potli is a soft pouch that hangs from the wrist. A framed clutch, also called a box clutch, has a rigid shell and a clasp that clicks shut. Both hold a phone, a lipstick and keys, but they behave differently once the dancing starts.
| Function | Best shape | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Mehendi (henna party) | Sling or chain-strap clutch | Wet henna on both hands means you cannot hold anything |
| Haldi (turmeric ceremony) | A dark or washable pouch | Turmeric stains, so leave pale satin at home |
| Sangeet | Clutch with a long chain | Goes across the body when you get up to dance |
| Wedding ceremony | Potli or framed clutch | Sits on your wrist or lap through a long sit-down |
| Reception | Glitter or satin framed clutch | Evening lighting flatters shine, and you can put it down at the table |
The one for the ceremony
A gold textured potli with a beaded wrist handle and a crystal brooch at the front. It reads as festive without needing any other jewellery, and it stays with you when you get up to give blessings.
- 17 x 19 x 8 cm (6.7 x 7.5 x 3.1 in)
- Button closure, one main compartment
- Loop handle goes round the wrist
Clutches and potlis for wedding week
Most framed clutches here include a chain strap. Check the photos and measurements against your phone.

What sizes do Lavie bags come in?
Lavie's small, medium and large labels vary between designs, so go by the measurements instead of the name. Here are the figures from the listings of bags in this guide, with height first.
| Bag | Centimetres (H x W x D) | Inches (H x W x D) | Holds |
|---|---|---|---|
| Textured laptop shoulder bag | 30 x 45 x 14 | 11.8 x 17.7 x 5.5 | 14-inch laptop, per its photos |
| Raily laptop tote | 29 x 39.5 x 5 | 11.4 x 15.6 x 2 | 14-inch laptop, per its name |
| Cobie backpack | 37 x 25 x 12 | 14.6 x 9.8 x 4.7 | Up to 15-inch per listing; measure first |
| Cetan sling | 19 x 22.5 x 12.5 | 7.5 x 8.9 x 4.9 | Phone, wallet, passport, glasses |
| Archer sling | 17 x 24 x 7 | 6.7 x 9.4 x 2.8 | Phone, cards, passport |
| Tiana potli | 17 x 19 x 8 | 6.7 x 7.5 x 3.1 | Phone, lipstick, keys |
| Blink framed clutch | 11 x 20 x 5 | 4.3 x 7.9 x 2 | Slim phone, cards, lipstick |
How do you care for a Lavie bag?
Wipe it with a clean, dry cloth, which is what most Lavie listings advise, and use a barely damp one for a mark that stays. Coated surfaces dislike heat and trapped moisture more than daily use.
- Skip the solvents. Alcohol wipes, nail polish remover and household sprays can dull or lift a PU finish.
- Store it stuffed. Fill the body with tissue or a soft scarf, and keep it in a cotton dust bag. Plastic traps damp.
- Keep it off radiators and out of hot cars. Heat is hard on the coating, whether that is a Toronto apartment in January or a parked car in Dubai.
- Air it in humid weather. In Singapore or a Sydney summer, take bags out of closed cupboards now and then.
- Watch the dark denim. Indigo can rub onto pale bags, so wear white and cream slings carefully.
- Wrap the chain. On a satin clutch, slip the chain inside with tissue around it, so it cannot press marks into the fabric.
- Blot satin and glitter, never rub. Rubbing spreads a stain and loosens sparkle.
How to judge a Lavie bag before you commit
Whether a Lavie bag is good depends on the design, so judge the bag and not just the badge. Zoom in on the stitching at the handle joins, where weight pulls hardest. Read the pocket count, because a bag with no inner pockets turns into a jumble. And be honest about your load: on a long commute, a smaller shape with a removable strap may serve you better than an oversized tote. Where a card shows a rating, it speaks for that design, not the whole brand.
