The Indian Garage Co: Who Owns TIGC, Its Shirts and How They Fit
The Indian Garage Co, or TIGC, is an Indian casual menswear brand started by Anant Tanted in Bengaluru in 2012. Here is who owns it, what its shirts are like and how its sizes read abroad.

In short
- The Indian Garage Co, also written TIGC, is an Indian casual menswear brand founded by Anant Tanted in Bengaluru in 2012.
- TMRW, the Aditya Birla Group's house of brands, invested in TIGC in October 2023, and trade reports from 2026 put its holding at a 51% majority stake.
- TIGC shirts are labelled 38 to 46, and that number follows the garment's chest in inches, not the collar size used on US, UK and EU dress shirts.
- A regular fit TIGC shirt labelled 42 measures about 43 in (109 cm) across the chest, which reads close to a US or UK medium as a general guide.
- Oversized and boxy TIGC shirts run about 3 to 6 in (8 to 15 cm) wider than a regular shirt with the same label, so stay with your usual number.
The Indian Garage Co, or TIGC, is an Indian casual menswear brand that Anant Tanted started in Bengaluru in 2012, when he was 23. It is known for casual shirts, T-shirts, jeans and chinos. TMRW, the Aditya Birla Group's house of brands, invested in 2023 and is reported to hold 51%.
You may have met this label in a cousin's suitcase, or on the back of a boxy T-shirt at a Diwali party in Toronto. Here is its story, its shirts and its sizes, read for anyone who grew up on S, M and L. The full range sits on the The Indian Garage Co brand page.
Who founded The Indian Garage Co, and where did it start?
Anant Tanted founded it, and it started in a small office in Koramangala, Bengaluru. In an April 2024 interview with Apparel Resources, the story runs like this: he was 23, he had a loan of 10 lakh rupees (1 million rupees) from a government scheme, and the team was four people.
The aim he describes is simple: trend-aware clothes for young Indians at a sensible cost, with ideas drawn from streetwear, music, art and pop culture. That explains the range: clothes for a Saturday, not a boardroom.
We found no published account of why the name says garage, so we will not guess. TIGC is simply its initials.
Who owns TIGC now?
TMRW, part of the Aditya Birla Group, is reported to hold a 51% majority stake, with Anant Tanted still named as founder and chief executive in the brand's 2025 announcements. TMRW is a house of brands, a company that backs and grows a group of fashion labels.
The money came in October 2023, about 155 crore rupees according to Inc42 and the Aditya Birla Group's own brand page. The stake was not disclosed at the time. The 51% figure comes from 2026 trade reports in Franchise India and Indian Retailer.
So the short answer to "which country is this brand from" is India, on both counts: it was started in Bengaluru, and its majority owner is an Indian group.
What is The Indian Garage Co known for?
It is known for casual menswear, and men's clothes are still the bulk of the business: Tanted put them at about 90% of revenue in that 2024 interview. Among Indian men's casual wear brands, it sits at the young, trend-led end. Three names are worth keeping straight:
| Label | What it is | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|
| TIGC | The main menswear label: shirts, tees, jeans, chinos, jackets | Most men, regular to oversized fits |
| FreeHand | Its women's wear label | Women wanting the same casual mood |
| HardSoda | Its plus-size menswear label | Men above the main label's largest sizes |
The first brand-run outlet opened on Brigade Road in Bengaluru in October 2024, with the cricketer Suryakumar Yadav, its brand ambassador, as guest. A year later came a film called Outlawed with a streetwear drop, in which Tanted argued that streetwear should be about expressing yourself, not hype. In November 2025 a campaign called #FreeStyleIt brought a refreshed look for the brand.
What are The Indian Garage Co's shirts like?
Its shirts fall into three families, and it helps to know which one you are looking at before you read a size chart. All of them sit in the men's shirts section of our men's department.
Everyday checks and plains
These are the classics: a regular collar, a chest pocket, a curved hem and sleeves meant to be rolled. The big tartan checks are the most recognisable. Read the fabric line, because it varies. The navy mandarin collar shirt below is 100% cotton, while some of the checks are cotton blends. A mandarin collar is a short stand-up band with no fold, and it dresses up well with almost no effort.
A loud check that still works
A mustard-yellow check with blue and white lines, a single chest pocket and a regular fit. It is a cotton and polyester blend, so it creases less than pure cotton. Wear it open over a white tee with pale jeans.
- Regular fit, label 38 to 46
- Machine wash
- Layer it open as a light overshirt
Everyday shirts
Checks, a clean white, a soft lilac linen and a band collar.

Resortwear shirts
Resortwear is the word the brand's listings use for holiday shirts with a flat, open collar, called a camp collar, and short sleeves. They are where the label is most interesting, with textures you do not expect at this level: waffle weave, dobby (a small woven texture), a lacy warp knit, and small embroidered motifs.
The one to pack for a warm wedding weekend
A 100% cotton, cream-toned shirt with small green diamond motifs embroidered across the front and sleeves, and a relaxed cut. It looks considered at a pool lunch with linen trousers and clean sneakers.
- Relaxed fit, label 38 to 44
- Machine wash
- Wear it untucked
Resortwear shirts
Textures and prints for heat, holidays and long lunches.

Streetwear shirts and tees
This is the side the brand has pushed hardest lately. Expect a wide, cropped, boxy cut and big prints across the front or back. The T-shirts and polos cover the quiet end of the same idea, including a solid polo in 52% cotton and 48% polyester.
Boxy shirts, graphic tees and a plain polo
Size these by the chart, because the cut is much wider.

How do Indian shirt sizes read abroad?
On TIGC shirts, the label number follows the garment's chest in inches, so a 42 reads close to a US or UK medium. This is a general guide, not an official conversion, because no shared standard exists and letter sizes differ by brand. The table uses the chart that many of its regular fit shirts carry.
| Label | Chest | Shoulder | Length | Roughly abroad |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 38 | 38.5 in (98 cm) | 16.75 in (43 cm) | 28.9 in (73 cm) | S |
| 40 | 40.75 in (104 cm) | 17.5 in (44 cm) | 29.5 in (75 cm) | S to M |
| 42 | 43 in (109 cm) | 18.25 in (46 cm) | 30.1 in (77 cm) | M |
| 44 | 45.25 in (115 cm) | 19 in (48 cm) | 30.75 in (78 cm) | M to L |
| 46 | 47.5 in (121 cm) | 19.75 in (50 cm) | 31.4 in (80 cm) | L |
Two traps catch people here.
- It is not a collar size. US and UK dress shirts are numbered by collar in inches and EU shirts by collar in centimetres, so an EU 38 means a 15 in collar. A TIGC 38 means a chest of about 38.5 in. The two have nothing to do with each other.
- The chart does not say garment or body outright. We read these numbers as the garment itself, because oversized shirts labelled 38 list a 42 to 44 in chest, which only makes sense as the width of the shirt.
The same label number changes a lot with the fit:
| A shirt labelled 40 | Chest | Shoulder | Length |
|---|---|---|---|
| Regular cotton, band collar | 40.75 in (104 cm) | 17.5 in (44 cm) | 29.5 in (75 cm) |
| Oversized striped resortwear | 44 in (112 cm) | 21.25 in (54 cm) | 29 in (74 cm) |
| Relaxed embroidered resortwear | 45 in (114 cm) | 21 in (53 cm) | 28.5 in (72 cm) |
| Boxy anime print | 46 in (117 cm) | 20.25 in (51 cm) | 28 in (71 cm) |
Tees use letters instead, and they run roomy. The polo above lists a 42 in (107 cm) chest at M, and the boxy back-print tee lists 44 in (112 cm) at M. Jackets start higher too: the bombers we checked begin at M, around 42 to 44 in (107 to 112 cm). Women's clothes from India work differently, and our Indian size chart for women covers them.
How do you style a TIGC shirt outside India?
Wear them as casual shirts, not as office shirts, and let the climate pick the fabric. A few outfits that work:
- Dubai or Singapore brunch: an embroidered or dobby resort shirt, untucked, over pale linen trousers and loafers. Skip polyester textures at midday if you run hot, and choose cotton or linen.
- Toronto or London in October: a tartan shirt worn open over a plain tee, under a bomber. The check becomes a layer, and you can take it off indoors.
- A Diwali house party: the textured kurta shirt or a band collar shirt with cream trousers. It nods to the occasion without a full outfit. For a wedding itself, you will want more, and our guide on what men wear to an Indian wedding covers it.
What should you wear with them?
Slim bottoms balance a boxy shirt, straighter ones balance a loud check, and a jacket finishes either. The jeans and chinos use a simple waist number: on the pairs we checked, a 32 is listed to fit a 32 in (81 cm) waist, as you would expect abroad.
Watch the leg length if you are tall. The jeans here list a 30 in (76 cm) inseam and the chinos 29.5 in (75 cm), the same at every waist on those charts. If you usually buy a 32 or 34 length, plan to wear them cropped, or choose a tapered pair where a shorter leg looks deliberate.
Jeans and trousers
Stretch jeans in three cuts, cotton chinos and a soft linen blend.

Jackets to layer over the shirts
Light bombers and a faux leather biker for cool evenings.
Is The Indian Garage Co a good brand?
It is an established label and a sensible choice for current casual clothes, as long as you treat it as everyday fashion, not heirloom tailoring. Its strength is variety: textures, prints and cuts that change often. Its weakness is that charts and fabrics differ from one design to the next, so read both every time.
Care depends on the piece, and the listings are plain about it:
| Piece | Listed fabric | Listed care |
|---|---|---|
| Band collar and embroidered shirts | 100% cotton | Machine wash |
| Linen resortwear shirt | Linen | Machine wash |
| Waffle resortwear shirt | Polyester | Machine wash |
| Warp knit lace shirt | Polyester | Hand wash |
| Faux leather biker jacket | Polyurethane outer, polyester lining | Dry clean |

Questions people ask
Who owns TIGC?
TMRW, the Aditya Birla Group's house of brands, is reported to hold a 51% majority stake after investing in October 2023. Anant Tanted founded the brand in 2012 and is still named as its founder and chief executive.
Which country is The Indian Garage Co from?
India. It was started in Koramangala, Bengaluru, and its head office is in Bangalore, according to the Aditya Birla Group's brand page.
Is The Indian Garage Co legit?
Yes, it is a real Indian clothing company with a named founder, a major Indian group as its investor and brand-run outlets in India. Judge each piece on its own fabric line and size chart, because those vary by design.
What size TIGC shirt should I buy if I wear a US medium?
Start with a 42 in a regular fit, which measures about 43 in (109 cm) across the chest. If you prefer a closer fit, look at the 40. Always compare the chart with a shirt you already own, since letter sizes differ by brand.
Should I size down in TIGC oversized shirts?
Usually not. The extra width is the point of the cut, and sizing down shortens the shirt as well.
