Kurta vs Sherwani: The Real Difference and Who Wears Which
A kurta is a light tunic worn on its own; a sherwani is a structured coat worn over one. Wear a kurta to most functions and keep the sherwani for the groom's side. A Nehru jacket sits between them.

In short
- A kurta is a light tunic that works as a complete outfit, while a sherwani is a structured coat that buttons down the front and is the outer layer.
- Length is not the real difference: in size M, the sherwani sets here measure 36 to 42 inches and the kurtas 40 to 43 inches.
- A sherwani usually marks the groom and his closest family, so a guest should ask the family before wearing one.
- A kurta with a Nehru jacket is the middle option, dressier than a kurta and far less bridal than a sherwani.
- If you own no Indian wear, buy a kurta set first, a Nehru jacket second, and a sherwani only when a wedding calls for it.
A kurta is a light, loose tunic you wear on its own; a sherwani is a structured coat you wear over one. Choose a kurta for most functions, and a sherwani if you are the groom or his closest family. A kurta with a Nehru jacket sits neatly between the two.
So the question is rarely which one looks better. It is how close you are to the groom, how hot the room will be, and how many times you will wear the thing again. Here is how to settle all three.
What is the difference between a kurta and a sherwani?
The difference is construction. A kurta is a shirt that grew up: soft, unstructured, open at the side seams and buttoned only partway down the chest. A sherwani is tailored like a coat, shaped through the waist and closed down the front, or left open on newer cuts to show the layer beneath.
| Kurta | Kurta with Nehru jacket | Sherwani | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | A loose tunic | A tunic plus a sleeveless hip-length jacket | A long tailored coat |
| Layers | One | Two | Two, sometimes one on slim sets |
| Neck | Band or mandarin collar, or none | Mandarin collar on the jacket | Mandarin or stand collar |
| Closes with | A short button placket | Full buttons on the jacket | Buttons down the front, or an open front |
| Worn with | Pyjamas, churidar or jeans | Pyjamas or churidar | Churidar, trousers, salwar or dhoti pants |
| Dress level | Relaxed to smart | Smart to formal | Most formal |
| Usual care | Often washable at home | Jacket often dry clean | Dry clean |
Two words you will meet here. Churidar are slim trousers cut extra long so they gather in folds at the ankle. Pyjamas are the straight, easier version. Read more about the kurta on its own in what a kurta set is.

Peach and white are for the day. Navy raw silk and mustard georgette are ready for the evening.

Is a sherwani always longer than a kurta?
No, and this is the part most comparisons get wrong. A traditional sherwani falls below the knee, but many modern slim sets stop around the knee, and a kurta can easily be the longer of the two. We read the size M charts of the pieces on this page, and the kurtas came out longest.
| Size M, front length | Inches | Centimetres |
|---|---|---|
| Kurtas | 40 to 43 | 102 to 109 |
| Sherwanis | 36 to 42 | 91 to 107 |
| Nehru jackets | 27.5 to 28.25 | 70 to 72 |
So judge by the structure, not the hem. If it stands away from the body like a coat and has a kurta peeking out beneath it, it is a sherwani. If it drapes like a shirt, it is a kurta, whatever its length.
A close cousin is the achkan, very similar but typically less flared at the hips. You will also hear jodhpuri or bandhgala: a hip-length, closed-neck jacket worn with trousers, more suit than coat.
How do the fabrics compare?
Kurtas run light and sherwanis run rich. A kurta can be plain cotton for a daytime function, or raw silk (slightly nubby, with a low glow) and dupion silk (crisp, with a visible slub and more shine) for the evening. Chikankari, the fine white-on-white thread work associated with Lucknow, gives cotton a dressed-up look without any weight.
Sherwanis lean on silk blends and jacquard, where the pattern is woven in rather than printed, then add embroidery or mirror work on top. That is why they feel hot. Two layers of it in a Dubai courtyard or a Sydney garden in January is a long afternoon. In a Toronto ballroom in December, it is exactly right. Kurta set vs sherwani for a wedding: who wears which?
Your place in the wedding decides it. The closer you stand to the groom, the more structure you wear.
| You are | Daytime functions | Main ceremony | Reception |
|---|---|---|---|
| The groom | Kurta set | Sherwani | Sherwani, bandhgala or suit |
| His father, brother or best friend | Kurta set | Sherwani or jacket set, as the family plans | Jacket set or bandhgala |
| A relative on either side | Kurta set | Kurta with Nehru jacket | Jacket set or bandhgala |
| A friend or colleague | Kurta set | Kurta with Nehru jacket | Jacket set, bandhgala or suit |
Families differ and so do regions, so treat this as a starting point and let the invitation overrule it. For each event in turn, see what to wear from haldi to reception, and for the full guest wardrobe see what men wear to an Indian wedding.

Check what comes in the set: some include a kurta, others only the coat and the lower half.

A sherwani that comes with its own kurta
This set answers the question of what goes underneath. The embroidered coat has a wrap-over front and comes with a green kurta and white trousers, so the colours are already worked out.
- Silk blend coat, cotton blend trousers
- Mandarin collar and multiple slits
- Dry clean
Can a guest wear a sherwani?
Yes, but ask first. No rule forbids it. The trouble is that a sherwani reads as family, and in the photographs a guest in one looks as if he has wandered into the groom's party.
Keep it safe with three checks. Ask the host, avoid the groom's colour, and skip heavy gold work and the turban. Plenty of families are delighted when a close friend makes the effort. A sherwani is also Pakistan's national dress for men, so at a Pakistani wedding you may see more of them on the floor. Still ask. If you want more on this kind of slip, read what not to wear to an Indian wedding.
Why is the Nehru jacket the middle option?
Because it adds the structure of a sherwani to the ease of a kurta. It is a sleeveless, hip-length jacket with a mandarin collar, also called a bundi, and its front borrows from the longer coats. The name is a slight fib: Jawaharlal Nehru himself preferred the long achkan and never wore the short version that carries his name.
It does the most work of anything in this post. Buy a set if you want the colours chosen for you, or buy the jacket alone and turn the kurtas you own into several outfits. When the dance floor heats up, it comes off and you are still dressed. Find more in Nehru jackets and sherwanis.

A plain cotton blend, a silk blend with gold, a woven navy, and pure wool for a cold country.
What shoes and accessories go with each?
Wear juttis or mojaris with both, the flat slip-on shoes made for Indian wear, and dress them to match the outfit. Laced shoes look wrong and are a nuisance when a ceremony means going barefoot. Many men's pairs live under men's ethnic shoes.
- With a cotton kurta: plain mojaris or smart sandals, and nothing else but a watch.
- With a silk kurta and jacket: textured or embroidered mojaris, plus a pocket square or a small brooch on the jacket. Choose one.
- With a sherwani: embroidered juttis in a tone of the coat, a stole over one shoulder and a brooch on the left chest. Grooms add the safa (a tied turban) and a mala (a long beaded necklace). Guests leave those to him.

Which is worth buying if you want to wear it again?
The kurta, easily. Count the realistic outings before you buy. A kurta set goes to Diwali, Eid, a mehendi and a friend's housewarming, and a jacket stretches it further. A sherwani goes to one wedding, unless you plan for it to do more. Browse men's kurtas if you are starting from nothing.
| Likely outings | Care on the labels here | Buy it when | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kurta set | Many, across a year | Cotton often machine wash; silk often hand wash | You own no Indian wear |
| Nehru jacket | Many, over different kurtas and shirts | Mostly dry clean | You own a kurta or two |
| Sherwani | Few, unless planned for | Dry clean | You are the groom or close family |
To get more from a sherwani, choose a colour with a life after the wedding. Cream, black and deep green work again in a way that groom-red does not. Choose light embroidery, too. Then wear it again with a different kurta, a new stole, or open over a plain set. The trousers can go out on their own.
How should each one fit?
A kurta should skim, and a sherwani should hold. Give a kurta room to move, with the hem around the knee. A sherwani needs to sit cleanly at the shoulders, leave room for the layer underneath, and close without pulling.
- Lay a well-fitting shirt flat and measure across the chest, then double it.
- Compare that number with the chest on the size chart, not the letter on the label. In size M, the kurtas and sherwanis here run about 41 to 44 inches (104 to 112 cm).
- Watch for the words slim-fit. Several sherwani sets here are cut that way, so check there is room for the kurta you plan to wear under it.
- Try it on well before the wedding, so a tailor has time to adjust the sleeves and the hem.
Questions people ask
Is a kurta the same as a sherwani?
No. A kurta is a soft tunic that works as a full outfit with pyjamas or churidar. A sherwani is a tailored coat that goes over a kurta or a matching lower half, and it is much more formal.
What do you wear under a sherwani?
Usually a plain kurta with churidar or slim trousers. Some sherwani sets include a kurta and some include only the coat and the lower half, so check the set before you plan around it. Keep the kurta plain and let the coat do the talking.
Can a wedding guest wear a kurta instead of a sherwani?
Yes, and most male guests do. A silk kurta with a Nehru jacket is correct at almost any function, including the main ceremony and many receptions. Only the groom and his closest family are normally expected to wear a sherwani.
What is the difference between a sherwani and a jodhpuri?
A sherwani is a long coat that reaches around the knee or below. A jodhpuri, or bandhgala, is a hip-length closed-neck jacket worn with trousers, so it behaves more like a suit. The jodhpuri is the easier one to re-wear.
What shoes go with a sherwani?
Embroidered juttis or mojaris in a tone of the coat are the classic choice. They slip off quickly when a ceremony is barefoot and they suit the long line of the coat. Laced shoes tend to look out of place.
Can you wear a Nehru jacket with jeans?
Yes. Choose a plain, dark jacket and wear it over a white kurta or a simple shirt with dark, slim jeans. It suits a casual party better than a wedding.
