Soch Brand: Its Story, Its Sarees and How to Wear Them
Soch is a women's ethnic wear label from Bangalore, known for festive silk-blend sarees, kurta sets and ready-made blouses. Here is where it began, whether it is good, and how to wear it.

In short
- Soch is a women's ethnic wear label based in Bangalore, launched by Vinay Chatlani in 2003, with its first store in 2005.
- The label is strongest in occasion wear: festive sarees, kurta sets with a dupatta, and ready-made saree blouses.
- Soch is a good choice for festive dressing in the middle of the market, as long as you read the fabric line, because most of its shine comes from silk blends and art silk, not pure silk.
- Its sarees run 5.5 metres with a 0.8 metre unstitched blouse piece, so plan for a tailor or buy one of its ready-made blouses.
- Most festive Soch pieces are labelled dry clean only, while some of the cotton sarees can go in the machine.
Soch is a women's ethnic wear label from Bangalore, India, known for festive sarees, kurta sets and ready-made blouses in silk blends and embroidered fabrics. Vinay Chatlani launched it in 2003 from a multi-label clothing business, and it now has more than 175 brand stores. It suits occasions more than bridal wear.
How did Soch begin?
Soch began as a house label inside a small clothing business, then outgrew it. FashionUnited's 2018 profile says Chatlani started in 2003 with a multi-label operation of five outlets, and that the growth came once the company's own label got a storefront of its own.
The dates shift a little depending on what you count. Retail Insider, in a 2024 interview, places the first store in Bangalore in 2005. Retail4Growth describes that opening outlet as 600 square feet, about 56 square metres, roughly the size of a large one-bedroom flat. Read together: 2003 for the launch, 2005 for the first Soch shopfront.
One honest gap. Soch's own About page does not give a founding year or name its founders. It talks instead about individuality, fabric and embroidery. Chatlani's name and role come from the trade press, which calls him co-founder and CEO. We have left out family details that we could only find on unofficial biography sites.
What does the name Soch mean?
Soch is the Hindi word for thought or a way of thinking, and it rhymes with coach. Autocomplete often turns it into "such", so if you searched for "is such a good brand" and landed here, you are in the right place.
How big is Soch now?
Soch says it has over 175 brand stores across 68 Indian cities, with more than 3,000 styles in a store. The first branch outside India opened in Brampton, Ontario, in 2024, run by a franchise partner. If you live abroad, that is a useful signal: this is an established name at home, not a label that appeared last year.
It also moves quickly. In 2017 the company was putting out 40 to 50 catalogues a year, six to eight for each category. So a design you like may be gone next season, and a new one will take its place.
What is Soch known for?
Soch is known for occasion wear that is not bridal. Its chief executive drew that line in the 2024 interview: evening and occasion pieces rather than wedding-day outfits, and women's ethnic wear only. So there is no menswear, and you would not go to Soch for your own wedding lehenga. You would go for a sangeet, the music night before a wedding, or a Diwali party where you want to look properly dressed.
Three things stand out across the Soch range: woven festive sarees, three-piece kurta sets, and a deep shelf of ready-made blouses.
What are Soch's signature silk-blend sarees like?
They are woven or printed sarees in a silk blend, usually with zari, the metallic thread that gives Indian textiles their gold or silver line. A silk blend mixes silk with another fibre. You get the glow and body of silk with less weight and less fuss, though not the feel or the heirloom life of pure silk.
The colours are the point. Look at the fuchsia weave with a bottle-green end panel, or the orange and pink with a tasselled edge. Colour-blocking like this reads well across a big room and in photos.

The quiet one: grey tussar with a printed pallu
Tussar is a silk known for its slightly dry, textured surface. This one is a tussar silk blend in soft grey, with a metallic band and a busy printed pallu, the decorated end that falls over the shoulder. It is the piece for someone who finds fuchsia too loud.
- Grey carries gold or oxidised silver jewellery equally well
- Works for a daytime puja (a prayer ceremony) as easily as an evening dinner
- Labelled dry clean

| Measure | Metric | Imperial | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|---|
| Saree length | 5.5 m | about 18 ft | Standard drape; leaves enough for pleats and a full pallu |
| Saree width | 1.06 m | about 42 in | Reaches the floor on most wearers; if you are over about 5'9" (175 cm), tie the petticoat a little lower |
| Blouse piece | 0.8 m | about 31 in | Unstitched, so it needs a tailor |
| Dupatta | 2.25 m x 0.9 m | about 7.4 ft x 35 in | Long enough to drape over one shoulder or both |
Which other Soch sarees are worth a look?
Beyond the silk blends, the range goes in two directions: lighter and simpler, or darker and sparkling. Kasavu is the off-white saree with a gold zari border that Kerala wears at Onam, and the pure cotton one is labelled for machine wash. Chanderi is a light, slightly sheer weave named after a town in Madhya Pradesh. For a party, the satin and crepe sarees with beads and stones along the border do the work a necklace would.

What are Soch kurta sets like?
They are mostly three pieces: a calf or knee-length kurta, trousers rather than a salwar, and a dupatta, the long scarf that finishes the look. If you are new to the format, what a kurta set is explains the parts and lengths. The trouser cut keeps them current, and you can wear the kurta alone with your own pants later. To compare, see all kurta sets.
Fabrics run from Chanderi cotton through viscose rayon to organza, a crisp, sheer fabric, paired with dupion silk trousers. For cold weather, take the organza or silk-blend sets and add a fitted jacket or a long coat over the top on your way in.
The easy festive set: red with a patterned dupatta
A plain red A-line kurta and trousers in a silk blend, with a heavily patterned dupatta doing all the talking. You need very little else: small earrings, a metallic flat, done. It is the set to buy if you own no Indian clothes and have a party on the calendar.
- Kurta, trousers and dupatta all in silk blend
- Calf-length kurta with three-quarter sleeves
- Labelled dry clean

How do you wear Soch for different occasions?
Match the fabric to the event, then keep the styling simple, because these pieces already carry a lot of colour and pattern.
| Occasion | Pick | Pair with | Skip |
|---|---|---|---|
| Diwali party | Silk-blend zari saree or organza kurta set | Gold or kundan earrings, block heels | Extra necklace if the neckline is worked |
| Sangeet as a guest | Bright colour-block saree or embroidered set | Jhumkas (bell-shaped earrings), shoes you can dance in | Stiletto heels on a lawn |
| Puja or daytime function | Tussar blend, Chanderi or kasavu | Temple jewellery, juttis (flat embroidered shoes) | Beads and sequins by day |
| Office Diwali or dinner | Printed tunic or embroidered kurta with trousers | Small studs, a clean tote | A full dupatta if you will be at a desk |
| Evening reception | Satin or crepe saree with beadwork | Sequinned blouse, a slim clutch | Heavy jewellery competing with the border |

Why do Soch's ready-made blouses matter?
They solve the biggest problem with buying a saree abroad: finding a tailor who can cut a blouse in time. Soch makes a long run of ready-made blouses, from plain sleeveless art silk to padded and sequinned styles. Art silk is a man-made fibre that imitates the shine of silk. A gold or black blouse goes with nearly any saree you already own, so one good one earns its place.
Sizes run in letters, and most models on these pages are about 5'8" (173 cm) in a size S. Compare your bust and waist against our Indian size chart before you pick, since a blouse has far less forgiveness than a kurta. Browse all saree blouses if you want other cuts.

Hook and eye closures, in solid, embroidered and sequinned finishes.
Soch also sells unstitched dress material, which suits you if you have a tailor you trust. You get about 2.5 metres (8 ft) each for kurta and bottoms, and 2.25 metres for the dupatta, and you decide the cut.

Is Soch a good brand?
Yes, for festive dressing that looks considered, with one thing to keep in mind: know what fabric you are buying. Soch has more than two decades behind it and a large store base, and the design is what you are paying for. The colour sense and the matching of kurta, trousers and dupatta are the strongest parts.
- Choose Soch if you want a coordinated festive outfit, a colourful saree, or a ready-made blouse.
- Look elsewhere if you want pure silk to pass down, a bridal outfit, or menswear.
- Read the material line on every page. Silk blend, art silk and Roman silk are not the same as pure silk, and the label tells you which you are getting.
- Check the care line too. Most festive pieces say dry clean, which adds to the real cost of owning them, especially for embroidered work.

Questions people ask
Who founded Soch?
Trade press names Vinay Chatlani as co-founder and CEO. He launched the business in 2003 as a multi-label operation with five outlets, and the first store followed in Bangalore in 2005. Soch's own About page does not name founders, so these details come from FashionUnited, Retail4Growth and Retail Insider.
Is Soch pure silk?
Mostly not. Many of its festive sarees and sets are labelled silk blend, and its blouses are often art silk, so read the material line on each piece. Some pieces in the range are pure cotton or pure crepe, and the label says so.
Do Soch sarees come with a blouse?
They come with 0.8 metres of unstitched blouse fabric, about 31 inches, which a tailor makes up. The blouse in the photo may be for styling only. If you do not have a tailor, pair the saree with one of Soch's ready-made blouses.
Does Soch make men's clothes?
No. In a 2024 interview the company described itself as women's ethnic wear only. A man dressing for the same function can start with our guide to kurta vs sherwani.
Is Soch good for a wedding?
As a guest, yes. Its festive sarees and kurta sets suit a sangeet, a reception or a puja. The company itself positions its range as evening and occasion wear rather than bridal, so a bride would normally look elsewhere for the main outfit.
How do you pronounce Soch?
It rhymes with coach. It is the Hindi word for thought, and it is often mistyped as "such" in search.
